Mark 4:35–41 contains a detail that has always bothered me: Jesus was asleep while the disciples were fighting for their lives. The storm wasn't imaginary. The boat was taking on water. These were experienced fishermen, so if they were frightened, things were bad. Eventually someone woke Jesus with a question that sounds almost accusatory: "Teacher, don't You care that we are perishing?" That may be one of the most honest prayers in the Bible. We ask the same thing in different words. - Why aren't You doing something? - Why is this happening to me now? - How long are You going to let this continue? And perhaps the most unsettling question is not why the storm came, but why Jesus was sleeping through it. Was He careless? No. He was tired. Was He unaware? No. Was He worried? Apparently not. The disciples were reading the situation through the waves. Jesus was reading it through the destination. "Let us go over to the other side." That changes the story. Jesus never promised them a smooth crossing. He simply told them they were going to the other side. We often want God to explain the storm before we trust Him in it. But Mark gives us something more practical: Jesus was in the boat. That doesn't make the water less violent. It means the water doesn't have the final authority. There are seasons when we pray, and nothing seems to happen. A diagnosis doesn't change. A relationship remains broken. The financial pressure continues. Someone we love makes a decision we cannot fix. Heaven seems strangely quiet. Don't confuse quiet with absence. The disciples woke Jesus because they thought the storm meant they were finished. Jesus got up, spoke to the wind, and then asked them why they were so afraid. That's the point. When the storm of our life gets loud and God seems silent, remember where He is. Not on the shore. He is in the boat.
